Tivo's False Advertising

I've been a loyal Tivovangelist since getting my original series-one box some six years ago. This week my original machine finally gave up the ghost and I replaced it with a series-two model, looking forward to new features such as online scheduling. When I couldn't get the feature to work, I contacted support and learned that while Tivo happily accepts their monthly payment from me, Tivo doesn't support series-two features on units sold by DirecTV (whose unit I had bought through a third-party). This despite the fact that Tivo's site clearly claims these features work on any series-two machine. That's just false advertising.

Now I won't recommend people look for the Tivo brand when buying a DVR and I won't feel as bad when Tivo inevitably goes under.

More DirecTivo Suckiness (and finger pointing)

A popular TiVo message board is overflowing with complaints about the DIRECTV-TiVo DVR, including the HD DVR.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (January 3, 2007) -- DIRECTV has experienced several major issues with its new HD DVR. However, owners of DIRECTV's TiVo DVR say they are now having problems as well.

At the TiVo Community Forum ( http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=332166&page=1&pp=30 ), a popular message board for TiVo owners, complaints about the DIRECTV-TiVo recorder have filled more than seven pages in just two weeks. Posters say the device is failing to record shows and mysteriously deleting programs previously recorded.

The problem seems to be affecting all DIRECTV-TiVo recorders, including their HD DVR (HR10-250).

"Tonight my HR10-250 states it deleted Cold Case on TNT HD early to make space for another program. The kicker is, it did not record the program it supposedly deleted and the only program scheduled to record was Cold Case," says a poster named lmk911.

DIRECTV and TiVo yesterday did not return calls and e-mails asking for a comment on the apparent problem. The TiVo Forum posters say that DIRECTV's customer service has informed them that they are working to resolve the issues.

problematic IR channel changing

I upgraded to digital cable last year and went to IR channel changing. I discovered that one of the TiVo updates I had received had brought with it a "wizard" that determined the optimal IR codes to use. I ran through it and it worked perfectly. Channels changed reliably for months.

About a month ago, that changed. The TiVo now fails to successfully change the channel about 15-20% of the time. I first checked the positioning of the IR transmitters, then reran that wizard. It didn't fail once. I waited a few days, missed a few recordings, then reran it. Again, it's bulletproof. Manually changing channels seems to always work fine. But I still miss a fair amount of my scheduled recordings.

Unfortunately changing channels via the serial cable isn't possible with this model of digital cable box. I would spend more time mucking about with the IR codes if the wizard didn't appear to so readily have success. The TiVo unit itself is about 4 yrs old.

Any ideas?

I have a TIVO Series 2 and have been considering cancelling it and my cable altogether. BUT, I really like being able to use the Home Medaia Option to pull movies from my computer, wirelessly, and watch them as if they were normal TV shows.
If I cancel my subscription, does the box just go dead or does it just stop grabbing programming schedules?

Season Pass Alert!: Frasier Season Finale

You'll get this on your TiVo DVR, too, but just in case:

On Thursday evening, May 13, NBC will air a special episode of Frasier followed by the series finale.

If you watch Frasier, check your To Do List to make sure both episodes will be recorded. Because of NBC's unusual start and stop times, you may also want to adjust the end-time of the finale to ensure that you don't miss the final few moments. To add extra time, select the finale episode from the To Do List, select "Options" and then adjust the "Stop Recording" option.

PLEASE NOTE: If you watch ER, do NOT adjust your recording of Frasier.
Instead, consider adding extra time to the end of ER.

To get to the To Do List, go to TiVo Central > Pick Programs To Record > To Do List.

You can find more information about using the recording options at the TiVo support site: www.tivo.com/recording

I have a Model 1 TiVo (live time service, 200++ hours recording, Ethernet, 1Gig cache accelerator etc...).

I go rid of Comcast and want to get Direct or Dish TV but don’t want to have to use the "IR control cable" due to the slowed response and other known problems.

I can't get a straight answer on what systems can be controlled via a direct (serial) connection; can anyone shed some light on this?

I'm now the proud owner of a TiVo Series 3. It arrived last week and I got around to upgrading it with a 500GB disk Wednesday night/yesterday morning. It now reports up to 65 hours of HDTV recording and 610 hours of SDTV. My CableCards arrive on Monday.

Next step... buy an HDTV! I'm looking at the Samsung 4095 which has true 1080i resolution. Anyone have any experience with this model?

NEWS: EchoStar must disable DVRs

EchoStar must disable DVRs, judge rules By Paul Bond
Fri Aug 18, 1:02 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - A judge has ordered EchoStar to disable the digital video recorders used by several million subscribers to its Dish satellite TV service because they infringe on patents held by TiVo.

Thursday's ruling from U.S. District Judge David Folsom in Marshall, Texas, demands that within 30 days EchoStar must basically render useless all but 192,708 of the DVR units it has deployed.

The decision comes four months after a jury ruled that EchoStar should pay TiVo $74.9 million because it willfully infringed TiVo patents that allow for the digital storage of TV programming.

The judge also denied EchoStar's request that the injunction be stayed pending appeal, making it difficult for EchoStar to continue offering its subscribers' DVR functionality without striking a quick licensing deal with TiVo or another DVR maker.

While the injunction battle clearly was won by TiVo, the scrappy pioneer of the DVR industry also was handed a loss Thursday when Folsom ruled against its request that the jury award be tripled. The judge, however, ordered EchoStar to pay an additional $5.4 million in interest payments and $10.3 million in supplemental damages, bringing the amount EchoStar owes TiVo to nearly $90 million.

I was having a discussion with a friend, and neither of us are clear on exactly which stats are reported to TiVo.

Everyone has heard that Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" was supposed to be the most-replayed moment of that year's Superbowl. Similarly, there seem to be statistics available on what commercials get skipped vs replayed. But where is the line drawn?

Is it only on live (or "nearly live") TV? Or are days-old recordings subject to this kind of scrutiny as well? It seems like that's a lot of data to compile on the DVR, report back to TiVo, and then parse.

Can anyone shed some insight here?

Tivo2 Finally adds a Recycle Bin and accidental delete Recover Feature!!

Hey just wanted to let all you Tivo addicts know that Tivo has rolled out a new version and service update package that your machine (if Tivo2) should have already installed and rebooted with the Tivo animation screen show. This new upgrade adds a key feature that we the users have been asking for, for quite a long time now. A Trash Can. Now when you delete a show it will be moved into a new folder in your Now Playing list (at the bottom) called "Recently Deleted" until the space is needed to record a new show at which time it will be permanently deleted.

Unfortunately these feature upgrades came two days to late for me as I accidentally erased The Sopranos S06e02 and had to pirate it off Bit-torrent and burn a DVD so that I could see it before moving on to Episode 3 which had already aired and was cued on my Tivo. lol

Well better late than never; this upgrade in my opinion the best new feature that Tivo has rolled out in a long time.

We as a Tivo community should thank them for listening to our feedback and be aware that if we want new features added to our pay service, if enough of us ask for it, their business model will do its best to give it to us. Man I love my Tivo2 even more now! Unlike countless other telecom companies it is refreshing to know that Tivo’s Management is actually listening to their customers and using good ideas to improve their overall product and customer experience.

I happy Tivo User
Smiles,
-Daniel-

So my TiVo remote is finally dead.
I gotta get a new one, but the only place I can find online is selling brand new replacement ones for like 60 bucks. (!)
Does anyone know of a better (read: cheaper) source?
I don't wanna try ebay either. I hate ebay. ebay killed my mother.

It's the remote for the Sony series 1 (old skool) SVR 2000.
I tried Sony's website but couldn't find one.
Any suggestions, fellow TiVo'ers?

Is there a way to prevent the cancelation of something that is in your season pass? At this point I'm considering taking the TIVO remote into my locked bedroom because I've had too many shows suddenly go unrecorded, or partially recorded because of my idiot roommate. (It's my TIVO, and my TV connected to it.)

Who Should Acquire TiVo?

There has been much speculation about TiVo's future and whether they can survive. I personally don't think TiVo will go away as the brand is too valuable, and there are so many TiVo fanatics (like me). I think someone will end up acquiring TiVo.

The question is who?

Who would you like to see acquire TiVo if it comes to that? Who do you think will?

I would *love* to see Apple acquire TiVo, but I doubt that's ever going to happen. Apple seems to develop most of their products in house. Also, TiVo needs Apple more than Apple needs TiVo.

I think a very possible canidate to acquire TiVo is Sony which might not be a bad hook up.

What do you think?

I'm sure a lot of this is old news for some of you, but I found this article pretty helpful. I had heard of some of these, but not all. For instance, I found the "Progress Bar - Begone Quicker" one extremely helpful.

Or rather, helpful @ playback/slo-mo/pause speeds, not ideal for FF/RWD speeds.

Anyway.

How do you? on Tivo2

Let me first start by saying that I love my Humax Tivo2 Player w/ DVD Burner! I have setup a ton of custom wishlist, but have run into a weird predicament.

How do you search for only new (Premier) movies on DirectTV movie channels such as HBO, Starz, Cinamax, etc. I only want to see movies that are airing for the first time and I can't figure a way to do this.

Tivo, if I remember right, used to have a great "Showcase" with most of the premium channels displaying their lineup by categories. With the current Tivo2 service the "Showcase" is much smaller and is mostly adds.
If anyone out there in the Tivo Community knows a good trick for searching or creating wichlists for Premier Movies I would really appreciate the insight.
Thanks

Anyone tried both?

I've had TiVO, but ReplayTV is looking real tempting, with the features and some of the LAN capabilities. Anyone actually used one? Does it work as well as they say?

For the price, it looks like I'd get everything I'd get with TV, but with the ability to stream to my pc from the unit, as well as upload my own content. Downloading content to the PC looks pretty easy as well.

Need some advice

I'm looking to get a PVR, Tivo or some other system, and need some advice. I don't want to have to pay the monthly fee to Tivo, so I'm planning on manaully setting recording times, unless there in some other legal way (alternate servers, etc?).

I also would like a way to network the device with my PC, so I can backup any shows I decide to save to the computer, and eventually out to DVD for archival purposes. I don't watch that much cable TV (we have Comcast here) but there are a few TV shows I enjoy and would like to be able to save (Project Greenlight, for one).

Any any one recommend a *good* website with clear answers to what I am looking for. As a long time geek I'm not afriad to modify a existist machine to do what I want. I had been thinking of setting up another PC to do some of the same stuff, but my TV Tuner is kinda fading, and I'd rather have a stand along machine for this if possible, so a HTPC could be used for other purposes at the same time.

Thanks!

The garbling of the signal and cutting out of the audio that was prevalent since January is now a thing of the past. Thank god they got something right.

OT: Be on a new reality show

I’m casting a brand-new reality show on engaged couples. It’s for a major network (sorry, can’t specify which of the 4 it is) on the prime-time schedule for next season. If you’re engaged to be married or seriously considering getting engaged, you might be right for us. We’re looking for couples who might have some issues with their future in-laws. I know, everyone gets along perfectly with their fiancee's mom, right? Yeah. Sure. :)

If you cringe at the idea of calling your partner's mother "Mom" once you're married, then our show is here to resolve the issue. And, like many reality shows, there's a healthy reward for couples who make the final cast. It's a family-oriented show (we want kids to be able to watch it as well) and it's going to be a lot of fun! If you’re interested or know someone who might be, then let me know with a mesage on here, or go to the website in my profile.

Thanks and good luck!

TiVO's Dismal Q4 Financial Results

(03-10) 17:56 PST Alviso, Calif. (AP) --

TiVo Inc. sank into a deeper fourth-quarter loss, weighed down by higher rebate expenses as the company continues to aggressively recruit subscribers.

The company said it met the goal of doubling the number of subscribers to more than 3 million, and noted that growing revenue, combined with planned cuts in acquisition spending this year, will help put TiVo into the black by the fourth quarter.

The Alviso-based maker of digital television recorders Thursday said it lost $34 million, or 42 cents a share, on revenue of $60 million in the fiscal fourth quarter ended Jan. 31.

The latest quarter's results included $3.2 million in non-cash charges from the redemption of convertible senior notes.

Analysts were expecting a loss of 43 cents a share, excluding items, according to Thomson First Call.

In the same period the previous year, it lost $12.4 million, or 18 cents a share, on revenue of $42.6 million.

TiVo added about 698,000 net subscriptions in the fourth quarter, more than double what it added in the fourth quarter of last year.

The company expects a first-quarter loss of $8 million to $10 million. In the first quarter a year ago, the company lost $9.1 million on revenue of $25.2 million.

TiVo expects a year loss of $10 million to $25 million, excluding options expense.

In the year ended Jan. 31, the company lost $80 million, or 99 cents a share, on revenue of $172 million.

In the previous year, it lost $32 million, or 48 cents a share, on revenue of $141.1 million.

TiVo reported earnings after the close of the Nasdaq Stock Market, which saw its down 18 cents, or 4.3 percent, at $4.34. In extended trading, after the release of the results, the shares rose 5 cents.

I've had TiVo for three years...yet this is the first year I indulged in the Oscars since getting it. Can I just say it was FABULOUS. Nothing like editing your own Oscar Presentation. Not only skipping commercials but speaches too (except for Jamie Fox of course)...

Every once in a while I am thankful for the TiVo Revolution all over again...tonight was one of those times.

(oooh, I'm loving my TiVo to Go upgrade I got yesterday too!)

I had a beta version and liked it a lot, but have yet to have any success in burning a show to DVD in a format taht can be played on a regular DVD player. Apparently, some new software from Sonic will sort that out in "mid-January".

Additional Wi-Fi converters should be supported now too.

football video quality

So far I've had TiVo for about 4 months and I love it. My only complaint is that the video quality is TERRIBLE during football games. I can see digital artifacts around the players that are from the digital video compression. Is there any way to fix this? To make sure I wasnt' crazy I plugged by cable box's s-video port right to my TV and sure enough the video quality was great.

On other programs I must not notice the inferior picture as much. At this point, I plan to unplug my TiVo during football games because I'd rather have a good picture than be able to pause and rewind. Is there anything I can do?

Note: I've already tried setting it to "Best Quality."

TiVo and Airport Express

I just got TiVo and so far it's awesome. I'd like to connect the TiVo to my wireless network. I currently have a phone line stretched across my dining room, plus I'd like to use the extra network features.

I have an Airport Express (AE) hub that I use to play MP3s on my stereo. At first I thought I'd be able to connect it to my Series 2 TiVo through the USB port, but I read yesterday that the AE hub's USB port can only be used for printers. The hub also has an ethernet port, so I bought a Belkin F5D5050 USB -> Ethernet adapter. I connected it all up and TiVo couldn't see my DHCP server (a linksys router).

I tried resetting the TiVo with the USB adapter already plugged in. I'm going to try running a long ethernet cable from the TiVo to the router in my office to make sure it isn't something wrong with my adapter or my TiVo. In the mean time, what do you suspect the problem is? I think it might a setting with my AE hub. Any thoughts?

the HUMAX tivo+DVD recorder

$399??

What do people think of this?

Here's my story.

I'm out of plugs on the back of my receiver, so I went out to get a DVD+VCR combo unit for $79. Low blood sugar and an impulse buy later, and I came home with a VCR+DVD recorder combo. As soon as I recovered, I realized that $299 for this unit may or may not have been such a good idea...

Enter the news that I could have bought a series 2 tivo, 80 hours, with DVD recorder for $399. (I'm living with a 30 hour series 1 tivo now). I really want the home media options with my wireless iBook, and more HD space would be awesome.

DOH.

But, before I return the combo unit and order the Humax, I have some questions.

1) I do have some VHS home movies I want to move to DVD, and I scratch my head how to do this with the HUMAX and a VCR...plug the video out components into the tivo (will that record onto the DVR?), then burn it to DVD?

2) Even with the DV firewire outlet on the front of the Humax, that only works for DV camcorders, right, not data from iDVD on my Mac. Right? I still can't burn DVDs from the Mac, correct?

3) Has anybody ever heard of this HUMAX outfit?? I thought that name was a joke at first.

Thanks in advance, oh tivo gods and goddesses.

Anyone have an HD TIVO? Any experiences using it?

It seems like with hundreds of hours of SD recording time, the single unsorted list of programs would get a bit unwieldy.

FCC says:TiVoGuard Digital Output Protection Technology is a go

TiVoGuard Digital Output Protection Technology (TiVo Inc.)
was approved by FCC today - Full technical details of their ruling can be found at http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-250532A1.doc

Article about it:

FCC paves way for TiVo use over Net
Agency discounts criticism that technology will give subscribers ability to mass-distribute digitally recorded TV shows
11:16 PM CDT on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - Associated Press

WASHINGTON – Federal regulators on Wednesday approved technology allowing TiVo subscribers to send copies of recorded shows over the Internet.

The idea was opposed by Hollywood studios and pro sports teams who believe it will lead to mass redistribution of movies and games. But in its unanimous decision, the Federal Communications Commission said there are enough protections in place to prevent that.

"We are recognizing the need to protect digital content without sacrificing innovation or frustrating consumer expectation," said FCC Commissioner Kathleen Abernathy.

TiVo Inc. allows subscribers to digitally record shows off their televisions.

The new technology would allow subscribers to download those broadcasts to their computers and send copies of recorded shows to their offices, homes, or from different rooms within a home.

A recording could also be sent to a few friends as long as they are on the subscriber's registered account.

The technology has drawn fire from the Motion Picture Association of America, the National Football League and Major League Baseball. They argue that the ruling could let TiVo users redistribute shows over the Internet to virtually anyone at any location.

The technology that TiVo asked the FCC to consider recognizes "broadcast flag," which the agency approved in late 2003.

The flag is an electronic signal that tells DVD recorders to encrypt the digital coding when recording to prevent distribution of the shows over the Internet.

TiVo officials said that means movies and sports broadcasts can't be sent to mass audiences.

TiVo shares rose 4 cents Wednesday to close at $5.15.

With all the threats to TiVo's survival. I don't consider this a good thing even though I've always been all for hacking your TiVo. TiVo walks a thin line, keeping the studios happy with control over content and as much freedom as they give the users. If TiVo becomes considered an open system, this will make it impossible for them to offer new features and stay out of legal entaglements.

TiVo vs. the Broadcast Flag Wavers (Washington Post)

From yesterday's Washington Post. Rob Pegoraro's Fast Forward column. Requires registration to read so here's the body.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A29428-2004Jul31.html

TiVo, the company that makes the digital-video-recorder boxes that inspire such strange idolatry among their users, is in a weird spot. It's asking the Federal Communications Commission for permission to add a new feature -- the option for a TiVo user to send recorded digital TV programs via the Internet to nine other people.

Huh? Permission? Doesn't the government's involvement in consumer electronics stop with making sure that a gadget doesn't jam your neighbor's reception or electrocute you? Since when do the feds get to vote on product designs?

The answer is, since last November, when the FCC voted to require manufacturers to support the "broadcast flag" system by July 1 of next year. This convoluted mechanism aims to stop full-quality copies of digital broadcasts from circulating on the Internet.

The FCC didn't mandate any one anti-file-sharing scheme and instead invited companies to submit their own proposals, which brings us to TiVo's vaguely Soviet predicament. Among the schemes a handful of firms have proposed, only TiVo's would allow tightly controlled online transfers of recorded programs.

For this, the company has drawn the ire of the National Football League and the Motion Picture Association of America, which have asked the FCC to deny TiVo's proposal.

The NFL says that TiVo's Internet-sharing feature will allow people to send game broadcasts to blacked-out viewers in real time (a team's home game can be aired locally only if it sells out beforehand).

"It's a question of pure ability to sell tickets," said Frank Hawkins, the NFL's senior vice president for business affairs. "Buffalo typically sells out September and October, but they've got an open-air stadium. They'll never sell out those December games if they are unable to enforce the blackout rule."

This is an important point: The NFL is not asking the FCC to protect its television business -- never mind that the flag exists only to stop indiscriminate file sharing, not cure every copyright-infringement issue.

No, the NFL is asking for help with a stadium business, one that already benefits from massive government welfare. (A December 2002 Buffalo News story calculated that the taxpayers of Erie County, N.Y., had anted up about $148 million for the Bills and their stadium over the previous decade.)

In other words, the league is asking manufacturers and viewers to further subsidize team owners who are already gorging themselves at the public trough.

There's also the slight problem that the NFL's nightmare -- blacked-out viewers watching a game live on the Internet -- is all but impossible. With almost every broadband connection available today, it would take hours to upload a game. A recipient would be lucky to finish watching a Sunday afternoon game before Monday, and sending a high-definition copy would take most of the week.

Jim Burger, a lawyer for TiVo, fumed about the NFL's complaint: "Maybe their engineers understand how to inflate a football, but I don't think they understand encoded, encrypted MPEG-2," TiVo's tightly secured format.

Whenever full-quality, real-time video on the Internet does become commonplace, I expect to see the NFL capitalizing on it instead of complaining, just as it has profited from such earlier advances as satellite TV.

The MPAA, meanwhile, says that the way TiVo would allow customers to share recordings online with people who may not be friends or family members amounts to indiscriminate redistribution.

The Washington-based group wants TiVo to impose an "affinity requirement," said Fritz Attaway, its executive vice president for government relations.

But how can TiVo tell if the people to whom you've sent a program are really friends and family without launching its own Total Information Awareness program? Attaway called that "a good question." Until that can be answered, his lobby contends that the safest course is to block Internet sharing -- after all, he noted, you can just pop a DVD in the mail.

What the MPAA and the NFL overlook is that every TiVo box includes analog video outputs that can't enforce copy controls. These allow these devices to work with the millions of TV sets lacking digital inputs, but they also let anybody plug a TiVo into a computer to upload video at will.

The FCC has already ruled out proposals to eliminate or deactivate analog outputs. ("We'll probably have to go to Congress to enact legislation to deal with that," Attaway said.) If the problem the MPAA and the NFL describe is real, the remedy they seek won't solve it.

Understand that TiVo itself is no hero. Its proposed system is thoroughly hobbled. The people to whom you'd send recordings online would need you to add them to a "secure viewing group" by ordering special security keys for their Windows computers, associated with your TiVo bill. Each viewer would need to plug one such key into a PC to receive, watch or edit your recordings.

Left on its own, the market could give TiVo's system its appropriate reward. Except we don't have a free market in digital television -- the FCC guaranteed that by approving the broadcast flag.

The MPAA and the NFL phrase their objections as reasonable attempts to err on the side of caution. "We're asking them to just wait awhile, let's think it out more thoroughly," Attaway said.

But if a programmer or an engineer with a bright idea has to go to Washington, hat in hand and lawyers in tow, to request permission to sell a better product -- and is then told "just wait awhile" -- we are on our way to suffocating innovation in this country.

TiVo wants to give their users the ability to transfer the programs they have recorded on TiVo to their PC (and eventually to DVD).
The Hollywood studios and the NFL are fighting this tooth and nail
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/5482232/

Notice that there are ways to hack your TiVo today to add that fucntionality. It requires replacing the operating system so it is not for the faint of heart.

Archos ships 'TiVo to go' handheld video recorder
By Tony Smith (tony.smith at theregister.co.uk)
Published Thursday 15th July 2004 13:37 GMT

Reg Kit Watch French portable media player specialist Archos has
announced its latest video device aimed at consumers who want to record TV shows and watch them on the move.

The AV400 series offers either 20GB or 80GB of storage for audio, video and still photography. There's the usual broad array of supported formats: MP3, WMA and WAV for audio; MPEG 4 SP, XviD, DivX 4 and 5 for video; and JPEG (non progressive) and BMP for stills.

The players used MPEG 4 SP to record programming (at 512 x 384 and 30fps), pumped into the device from a TV, set-top box or VCR via a docking cradle. The cradle is capable of controlling the VCR or set-top box's tuner and incorporates a timer to record content when you're not around.

There's a built-in microphone and audio jacks whose input can be saved in any of the supported formats. Archos said it intended to offer a separate FM tuner which can also be used to record radio programmes. Cunningly, the machine buffers everything, allowing you to capture a complete song or show,
even if you don't press 'record' as soon as it starts.

A CompactFlash slot allows picture taken on a digital camera to be transferred straight to the AV400's hard drive. Other card formats are supported by an optional add-on. Files can be exchanged with a Mac or PC via a USB 1.1 or 2.0 cable.

Archos is offering two AV400 series machines: the 420 and the 480. The former sports a 3.5in display, the latter a 3.8in panel. Both 320 x 240 screens provide 262,00 colours. Content can also be displayed on a TV via the docking cradle.

The two models weigh 280g and 320g, respectively. Both measure 12.5 x 7.8cm in front, but while the 20GB unit is 2cm thick, the 80GB model is slightly deeper, at 2.6cm. The AV420 provides up to four hours' video playback and 12 hours of audio-only play. The higher capacity model yields 4.5 hours and 16 hours, respectively.

The AV400 series doesn't come cheap, however, with the top-end model cost as much as a mainstream notebook computer. The 20GB AV420 will be available on 19 July, for $550/£400/?TBA. The 80GB AV480 is available now for $800/£600/?900.

what do you tivo?

hey guys, new to the tribe....

i keep telling anyone that will listen (and those that are apathetic) that tivo is the wave of the future. my hubby and i agree that we will never be able to live without tivo.

so, what do you tivo?
right now, i'm tivo-ing (i love tivo as my new fave verb!):
friends; ER; american chopper; buffy the vampire slayer; monk; boohbah (that's for the kids :D). my "now playing list" has so many yellow bubbles and yellow ! bubbles that i'm amazed they're staying there... and i don't think i'll ever be bored, because i have about fifteen eps of friends in the queue....

so anyway, what do you have that you keep telling yourself, "i'll watch it later..." ?

Season Pass question

Hi y'all, I'm new to the TiVo thing. I got a series 1 TiVo from my neighbor when he moved to Europe and left it behind. I totally love it, even if I am watching too much TV now.

My question is, how to manage a season pass on a show that airs several times a day.

See, I want to record the Daily Show on Comedy Central, which airs at 11 PM, 1 AM, and 10 AM the next day, etc. This was the first season pass I put in, and I could swear that the TiVo was smart enough not to re-record the same episode twice. Or, I could be on crack.

Then as I added more season passes, it started interfering with other shows at 11, so I canceled that season pass and recreated it, based on the 10 AM-the-next-day show of Daily Show. This seemed to work, except that I was always a day behind on the episode of the show...and, now I'm getting three recordings a day of the Daily Show, all the same episode.

What have I done?! Well, more importantly, my question is should the TiVo be smart enough to not record the same episode again and again, or do I need to live with it? As workaround I've been going into the To Do list and eliminating extra episodes, but that kind of takes the joy out of the season pass idea.

Any tips are appreciated.

Legal action from TiVo

For any that aren't aware of this. TiVo is now starting legal action against sites hosting images of the OS. I imagine that this must be due to trying to keep the MPAA happy and allow networked TiVos to function with DRM and not be considered a tool for piracy, which would only put them under attack from MPAA. Get your backups while you can.

Last week when I woke up i found my TiVo was “going nuts” like someone was pushing random buttons on the remote. The remote was fine (I pulled the batteries out just in case), eventually I covered up the IR sensor; The TiVo kept acting as if someone was tap-dancing the remote.

I ended up having to “pull the plug” to reset the device and it had acted normal ever since.

Has anyone experienced or heard of this behavior?

TiVo Cuts Prices on TV Services

TiVo Cuts Prices on TV Services

By Franklin Paul

NEW YORK (Reuters) - TiVo (news - web sites) Inc. on Wednesday said it cut prices on both its set-top boxes and home networking services, amid a drive to add subscribers to its television recording systems.

The Alviso, California-based company, which makes digital video recorders (DVR), also said it was working on delivering via the Internet unique programming, such as independent films, to subscribers' set-top boxes.

The news came one day after DirecTV Group, TiVo's biggest source of new subscribers, said it had sold its stake in TiVo. While DirecTV said its link to TiVo remains strong, some analysts suggest TiVo relies too much on DirecTV and that ties between the companies have weakened.

"DirecTV is an important OEM (original equipment manufacturer) customer to us," TiVo executive vice president Brodie Keast told Reuters. "To the extent that we continue to serve them well as a customer, we believe there is a long-term future to this relationship."

All the same, much of TiVo's focus this year rests on beefing up services it provides for its $13 a month fee, and making prices attractive to those who buy its "stand-alone" TiVo's Series2 DVR, at retail and on the Internet.

Under the new plan, the first TiVo subscription in a home will stay at about $13 per month, while each additional set-top box placed in another room will cost around $7 per month.

TiVo also said some retailers would discount TiVo DVRs, bringing the price of its set-top box with 40 hours of recording time to about $130, down from its usual $180.

SHARE DIGITAL PROGRAMS AT HOME

In addition, TiVo on Wednesday said it would now offer as a standard feature a way of connecting the programs recorded on the Series2 DVR to users' home computer networks.

The service, previously called the Home Media Option and offered at a $99 one-time-fee, lets TiVo users schedule TV recordings via the Internet, move pictures and music between two or more TiVo boxes in the home, and enjoy that digital entertainment on a home TV or stereo.

These networking options are not currently available to users of boxes co-developed by TiVo and DirecTV.

TiVo to bypass cable, satellite

by John Markoff, New York Times

The Internet, in jumping from the personal computer and into the living room television set, is starting to give viewers the possibility of bypassing traditional cable and satellite services.

TiVo Inc. of Alviso, the maker of a popular digital video recorder, plans to announce a new set of Internet-based services today that will further blur the line between programming delivered over traditional cable and satellite channels and content from the Internet. It is just one of a growing group of large and small companies that are looking at high-speed Internet to deliver video content to the living room.

The new TiVo technology, which will become a standard feature in its video recorders, will allow users to download movies and music from the Internet to the hard drive on their video recorder. Although the current TiVo service allows users to watch broadcast, cable or satellite programs at any time, the new technology will make it possible for them to mix content from the Internet with those programs.

"This is the fourth electronic video service, and it is an alternative to cable, satellite and broadcast television," said Tom Wolzien, an analyst at Bernstein Investment Research and Management. Those traditional services, Wolzien said, "have been the monster gatekeepers, but this is a way for content providers to get past them."

In the new world of Internet-connected television, viewers will not have to worry about either when a show is scheduled or where it originates.

"We're fully committed to developing an entertainment experience you can't get over normal broadcast television," said Michael Ramsay, chairman and CEO of TiVo. "This is what we think the future of television is."

Earlier this year TiVo, which has 1.6 million subscribers who use its digital video recorder with cable or DirecTV, acquired Strangeberry, a Palo Alto startup that had developed a new technology to view Internet video streams. TiVo is developing that technology and plans to integrate it into its system next year.

payperview movie ordered is reported!

Subscribers to the DirecTV satellite TV service should know – but probably don’t – that every pay-per-view movie they order is reported to TIA as is any program they record using a TIVO recording system. If they order an adult film from any of DirecTV’s three SpiceTV channels, that information goes to TIA and is, as a matter of policy, forwarded to the Department of Justice’s special task force on pornography.

LOL!! What the hell!

Hey all!
My Tivo suddenly thinks I'm bilingual. It keeps recording shows on Univision and the other spanish language stations, eventhough I keep giving them thumbs down (I'm sure they are good, I just don't speak spanish!)
anyone have any tips on how to tell Tivo that I'm only english speaking?
thanks!

anyone know the policy change dates for when tivo changed their policies for the "lifetime subscription" (and renamed it i think to "Product lifetime")

When I got my Philips TiVo the “lifetime subscription" was bound to the person not the unit thus can be applied to any one TiVo i own as opposed to these days where the "product lifetime” subscription is linked to a particular DVR, it cannot be transferred.

I have this obsession with historical reality shows. I have been trying to do some kind of search, but to no avail. I see that they don't have any search titles for reality shows yet. Any suggestions on another type of search.
I tried history search too and it was way too broad. Tons of listings, would take me all day to go through it all...

Thanks for your patience, I'm new to this. Just bought a series 2 TiVo. Already have a wireless cable internet set up at home. No phone line near TiVo. Should I just buy wireless modem jack to plug into wall near TiVo or buy wireless USB adapter to plug into DVR? Any advice? Gracias.

- Full Tivo (not the new Basic Tivo BS)
- Built-in DirecTV support
- Minimum 100 hours recording time
- Home Media Option (with no nickel-and-dime surcharges)
- Built-in DVD burner (that can play DVD, Audio, and MP3 discs)
- Basic editing capabilities (I don't need Adobe Premiere, but the ability to delete the 55 minutes I don't care about from a 2-hour show would be nice)
- Built-in disk defragging utility (That's why old Tivos get slower and slower)
- Dual fans and a more robust power supply. Better safe than sorry...
- Batch processing (so that when I want to push forward the expiration date or delete a bunch of recordings, I don't have to spend an hour doing them each one-by-one)
- Much better Tivo Suggestions AI (I have Thumbs Downed dozens of nature shows, yet every week a new batch of cuddly animal programs are suggested again. Worthless)
- Better sales staff for the Showcase feature (or just give it to all the major channels and make it a customer service) Currently it's down to just 5 channels and 3 ads. Again, worthless

The new Pioneer Tivo/DVD machine is a small step in the right direction, but all this technology exists (and is far from cutting-edge) right now. Would it be too much to ask for the above with a price tag around $500 (since that's about what all the parts cost separately)? Heck, I'd even pay an extra $100 to add PlayStation2 compatibility...

What to Buy? - newbie

I have never owned a TiVo but am finally looking to change that. I am more than willing to go with a different brand DVR if it presents a better value or allows me to forgo a monthly charge.

a few questions:

1) what does the monthly service give me that I won't get with a different (no monthly service) brand?

2) does upgrading to a larger HD involve anything more complicated than simply cloning the drive (using, say, Symantec's Ghost utility)?

3) I have ComCast digital cable - will this affect what I can/should use? I have seen them air promos about "DVR is coming to Comcast"... any reason to think their DVR solution would be a better choice?

Money is my biggest consideration. I dig the whole Pause Live TV and Skip Commercials promise, although I *would* like to be able to flag certain shows for automated recording. I don't need to burn these to disc or play MP3s or anything...

Any informed advice you can lend would be much appreciated. Specific model numbers are good...

Series 2, how hackable?

Before I do the big web search thing, I thought I'd check here. Bought a Sony series 1 ages ago. I also made sure I could add another drive, since the 30GB/30 hour high qual/100 hour low qual was just not gonna cut it. I added a 60GB which was the biggest I could buy at the time and have been pretty happy.

Now there are Series 2 units from TiVo and from DirecTV. With the DirecTV units there is no monthly TiVo fee.

I want a series 2 so that the signal is not doubly compressed, since they record the MPEG2 satellite signal directly to the hard drive. I've also heard of people carving up their case to make the drive removable. That way they power down the TiVo pull out the drive caddy and take it to their PC and burn a disc. So are any of these units able to add-on a second drive or replace the first one?

My current setup is a pain. I use a Dazzle external capture device and send it on firewire to the PC. Since the PC is capturing raw video that has been compresse and uncompressed twice now, well re-MPEGing again leaves we with quality of VCR.

TiVo & Pay Per View

I have just figured out how to order and TiVo a direct pay per view movie while out work...simple, I know, but brilliant. Now when I get home, if there's a movie to watch...it's just sitting there waiting for me! And, unlike HBO and Showtime, I can pause, stop, rewind...jeeze, this technology is brilliant!
