There has been much speculation about TiVo's future and whether they can survive. I personally don't think TiVo will go away as the brand is too valuable, and there are so many TiVo fanatics (like me). I think someone will end up acquiring TiVo.
The question is who?
Who would you like to see acquire TiVo if it comes to that? Who do you think will?
I would *love* to see Apple acquire TiVo, but I doubt that's ever going to happen. Apple seems to develop most of their products in house. Also, TiVo needs Apple more than Apple needs TiVo.
I think a very possible canidate to acquire TiVo is Sony which might not be a bad hook up.

Re: Who Should Acquire TiVo?
Thu, February 17, 2005 - 9:13 AMI think Sony would ruin Tivo. They have soooooo little feel for the consumer (tried there net mp3 recorder?), plus they are a large content owner. OTOH.......... they are a large content owner...
But on balance, I can't believe that any of the content owners will drive DVRs in a driection that the consumers want.

Re: Who Should Acquire TiVo?
Thu, February 17, 2005 - 10:18 AMApple would be a disaster for TiVo.
Given Apple's propensity for pissing away market share in home appliances (just look at their performance in personal computers), TiVo would not benefit from that relationship.
Their skills in interface design made the iPod a breakout product from the pack of pre-existing digital audio players, but time will bear out if they can hold on to that market share once competitors learn the lessons Apple's design has taught.
History seems to indicate Apple will again surrender market share and be relegated to their small niche of fanatically loyal customers (something TiVo already has accomplished). -

Re: Who Should Acquire TiVo?
Thu, February 17, 2005 - 2:58 PMthat may be true, and it may not be that practical, but that's a nice fantasy to have-
maybe you could hook your satelite straight into your mac desktop and just have a normal mac with TiVo software. Or maybe just a box that wirelessly routes the TiVo content to your powerbook in any room in the house. May never happen, ok probably won't happen, but it's nice to dream... -

Re: Who Should Acquire TiVo?
Thu, February 17, 2005 - 4:16 PMOver at Engadget.com, they have long advocated that TiVo should license it's software for PC's and/or Macs. The reasoning is that TiVo has a good brand name that people would buy, and not everyone wants to buy a new PC just to get Windows Media Center.
Think of the deals TiVo could strike with graphics card/TV tuner card makers such as ATI. ATI could bundle the TiVo software for free with their ATI All-In-Wonder card, and the TiVo could get new subscription revenue.
TiVo definitely needs to think of new ways of acquiring customers like this.

Re: Who Should Acquire TiVo?
Thu, October 20, 2005 - 12:40 PMI love TiVo, and would hate to see this happen but I think this is what is going to go down.
Any company interested in TiVo will watch and wait until they implode on themselves.
DirecTV will make them an incredible (read cheap) deal for their cusomer contracts, and then the technology patents will be split up and sold for pittance.
